Sheathing/Backerboard

Weather-resistant 1/4" minimum sheathing is recommended as opposed to drop-in backerboard.

As an alternative, installation of specific types of contoured foam underlayment for various styles of vinyl siding appears to be an effective drop-in style backer. A contoured foam underlayment is computer engineered to fit a particular manufacturers product profile. Therefore, make sure the backerboard installed is compatible with the siding.

Some manufacturers of vinyl siding do not recommend the employment of drop-in backerboard with certain vinyl siding configurations. (Consult your manufacturer for specific recommendations). For fire safety information, click here .

If backerboard is used, the following is recommended :
The bottom of the board should rest on top of the nail rail of the preceding course. The top of the backerboard should be even with the top of the siding panel so that the nails or staples pass through the backer.
Do Not force the backer down into the butt of the siding panel.
